Crocodiles vs. Alligators: what IS the difference anyway?

In terms of physical differences the easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that a crocodile has a very long, narrow, V-shaped snout, while the alligator's snout is wider and U-shaped.

Another physical difference between the crocodile and the alligator is that the crocodile's upper and lower jaws are nearly the same width, so the teeth are exposed all along the jaw line in an interlocking pattern, even when the mouth is closed. They also have an enormous 4th tooth on the lower jaw that is accommodated by depressions in the upper jaw just behind the nostrils.

Another physical difference is that crocodiles have a lighter olive brown coloration, while alligators appear blackish. Alligators also prefer freshwater while crocodiles like brackish water and sometimes even ocean.

The average alligator grows to about 14 feet (4.3 meters), while crocodiles can reach 19 feet (5.8 meters) or more.

More Color Keys

Changed time of day to mid-afternoon so there is more yellow/white light, and less red. Also, the light would be at a higher angle.

A frog and a toad are sitting on the side of a path. They are looking each other up and down, each of them convinced that they are much better looking than the other. After a while of preening, and showing off, they see a little girl walking along the path. As she gets near, the toad and the frog both puff out their chests for her, attempting to look better and more impressive than the other. The girl notices them, and screams "YEACHHHHHH!!!" She stomps on both the frog and the toad and takes off, running.

Synopsis #1 - The Frog and the Tadpole

Concept
Deception can have bad consequences.

Action
On the bank of a pond, a fat, contented-looking frog sits quietly minding his own business. Suddenly he hears a a high-pitched croaking at his feet, and looks down to see a young tadpole frog holding a stick, wagging its tail, and looking up expectantly at the fat frog. The little tadpole drops the stick at the frogs feet and sticks its tongue out, panting like a dog. The frog roles his eyes, reluctantly picks up the stick, and tosses it a short distance away. The tadpole enthusiastically bounds after the stick, and quickly brings it back to the frog, dropping it at his feet again. The frog, annoyed, picks up the stick and throws it further this time. Again the tadpole retrieves the stick and brings it back. The frog picks up the stick and, with a mischievous grin makes a motion of hurling the stick far, far away, while actually hiding it behind his back. The little tadpole, thinking the stick had been thrown, hops after it, disappearing in the distance. Satisfied, the fat frog settles back to sitting quietly. A few moments later, he hears a commotion and opens his eyes to see the tadpole holding a crocodile tail in its mouth. Realizing that the tadpole has just dragged back a large, very hungry looking crocodile, the frog leaps away in terror, with the tadpole gleefully following him.

Mood
Light, Cute, Humorous
